Step inside the forefront of fusion research! The DIII-D National Fusion Facility, a U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science user facility operated by General Atomics, is pioneering the science and technology needed to power the next generation of clean, limitless energy.

At the heart of the DIII-D National Fusion Facility is a tokamak, a fusion device that uses powerful magnetic fields to confine plasma—a hot, ionized gas––into a donut-shaped (toroidal) chamber. This allows scientists to study and control the conditions necessary for fusion, the process that powers the sun and stars. During this process, light atomic nuclei fuse to form heavier nuclei, releasing vast amounts of energy with the potential to be harnessed to produce electricity.

DIII-D plays a vital role in paving the way toward making fusion energy a practical and sustainable power source for the world.

What Makes DIII-D Unique:

  • Flexible Research Tool: DIII-D plasmas are highly customizable and extensively measured, allowing researchers to test new ideas, configurations, and technologies critical to future fusion power plants.
  • Key Contributions: DIII-D has made significant advances in the sustainment and control of plasma confinement, the development of advanced materials for the reactor environment, and the incorporation of AI and machine learning for fusion.
  • Shaping Future Devices: Many of the experiments conducted on DIII-D directly inform the design and operation of future fusion devices, including commercial fusion designs and ITER, the international fusion project under construction in France.
