Step inside the forefront of fusion research! The DIII-D National Fusion Facility, a mid-sized tokamak operated as an Office of Science user facility by General Atomics for the U.S. Department of Energy, is pioneering the science and technology that will power the next generation of clean, limitless energy.

tokamak is a device that uses powerful magnetic fields to confine plasma - a hot, ionized gas - into a donut-shaped (toroidal) chamber. This allows scientists to study and control the conditions necessary for fusion, the process that powers the sun and stars. During this process, light atomic nuclei fuse to form heavier nuclei, releasing vast amounts of energy with the potential to be harnessed to produce electricity.

DIII-D plays a vital role in paving the way toward making fusion energy a practical and sustainable power source for the world.

What Makes DIII-D Unique:

  • Flexible Research Tool: DIII-D is highly customizable, allowing researchers to test new ideas, configurations, and technologies critical to future fusion power plants.
  • Key Contributions: DIII-D has made significant advances in areas like plasma stability, confinement, and the development of advanced materials that can handle extreme heat and radiation.
  • Shaping ITER and Beyond: Many of the experiments conducted on DIII-D directly inform the design and operation of ITER, the international fusion project under construction in France, as well as future commercial fusion reactors.
