A tokamak is a device that uses powerful magnetic fields to confine plasma - a hot, ionized gas - into a donut-shaped (toroidal) chamber. This allows scientists to study and control the conditions necessary for fusion, the process that powers the sun and stars. During this process, light atomic nuclei fuse to form heavier nuclei, releasing vast amounts of energy with the potential to be harnessed to produce electricity.
